My Favorite New HW Site! deltamath.com

I am trying to start blogging and am taking part in the 2016 Blogging Initiative by the MTBoS.

One of my favorite websites that I actually came across a few years ago but wasn’t really able to implement well until this year is called Delta Math.

This website has continued to get better and better each year I have seen it. This year my school went 1-to-1 with Chromebooks. Every single one of my students has their own Chromebook. This has allowed me to start assigning homework online. I assign students a Delta Math assignment on a weekly basis. I assign it Monday and it is due Friday. Usually 10-15 problems or so. Delta Math is great for a number of reasons:

#1 It is FREE. That’s right: FREE! You can setup an account and get all your students accounts for FREE.

#2 Every topic you assign usually has tutorial videos as well as worked out step by step solutions so students always have a way of seeing an example.

#3 You can set up the assignments so kids are not punished for incorrect responses. I usually set mine so students have to get 5 problems right but this doesn’t have to be in order. Students can make as many mistakes as necessary until they start getting the concepts.

#4 The topics are constantly being updated and added to every few months. More “common core” friendly material and problem sets and aligned material have been appearing recently which has been great.

This site isn’t perfect. A lot of the problems are for procedural practice which is why I assign this weekly instead of nightly. Some of the concepts and walkthroughs are a little old fashioned and not what students may have discovered or found in your class. (For instance I avoided talking about the “vertical line test” but after assigning the delta math my students came back and starting using that language instead of the ideas they developed about functions in class). Also be sure to try some of the problems as I accidentally assigned some quadratic formula to my Algebra II students in the first few weeks of school only to realize that it included complex solutions (oops!).

Enjoy this website and I hope it becomes one of your favorites too!
